It is with a very heavy heart that I am sending this notification. Cancelling a ride which has run for the past 52 continuous years is not a decision to be made lightly. Unfortunately, the continued air quality in Virginia City and the surrounding areas has been averaging over 150+ AQI (unhealthy) for the past 5 days straight and the forecast is not showing any significant improvement for the coming weekend. I am just not willing to host a ride in potentially unsafe conditions. None of us want to ask that of our equine partners, and I also don't want all of our riders and volunteers having to be outside for long extended periods of time either.

This was a difficult decision to make as there is always a chance things could change and clear up unexpectedly. We had two riders (Lou Smith-Egstrom and Pat Chappell) who were riding for their 20th buckle this year. We had riders coming from smoke-free areas who did not have the long-term exposure concerns. If NASTR had been able to host the ride, it would have made Virginia City 100 the longest continually running 100-mile event, but unfortunately the same fire gremlin which made Tevis cancel on THEIR 53rd year in 2008 is also attacking our ride. 🙁

But for every wonderful and good reason we wanted to continue to put on the ride (numbers were never a concern thanks to some generous sponsors), the decision to DO RIGHT has remained clear even if it does not make it any easier. I was hopeful the air quality might improve and have pretty much given myself an ulcer checking and rechecking and looking at all the different forecasts and websites, but I'm just not seeing the numbers that I want to see to feel comfortable moving forward.

For all of our riders - we are offering you the opportunity to receive a full refund. Please contact me ASAP if you would like to donate a portion of your entry to help offset some of the expenses incurred. It is not required, but is appreciated. I expect to have processed all refunds by end of day Friday, Sept 18th.

We appreciate your continued support and patience. Our riders and volunteers really are the BEST! We hope each and every one of you will be able to join us NEXT year for Take-2 of the 53rd Annual Ride. We'll see you September 18, 2021!

With regrets,

The Nevada All-State Trail Riders are eagerly anticipating hosting the dedicated group of riders and volunteers for this years 53rd Annual Virginia City 100-Mile Ride on Saturday, September 19th. Due to COVID restrictions, the ride is limited to 60 riders and ALL VOLUNTEERS must be on a pre-approved list so we can manage our overall group size at the various ride checkpoints.

NASTR is working hard to make this event as special as ever and to retain that same "fun-loving" supportive casual vibe that our rides are famous for. If you want to just come watch and cheer on the riders, we can offer Virginia City tourism information as well as directions to several different locations along the trail which offer good access and viewing of the riders and horses.

The smoke - this is a bit of the elephant in the room but as of this time we DO NOT plan to cancel the ride for any reason. The smoke has typically not been as bad in Virginia City and the surrounding areas. Unfortunately, we cannot predict what the winds may do and conditions may change, including during the ride itself. But if the riders are willing to go - so are we - so let's have a RIDE.

We expect to fill up, and fill up FAST. Please find the link to the online entry below:
https://form.jotform.com/200277578444158

If you MUST fill out a paper entry and mail it in, please reply ASAP to this email with your relevant AERC information and I will send you the form. Your spot will be held for 5 days for you to mail in the entry and payment. I will publish the list of riders and the wait list shortly after all the spots have been taken. There has been a lot of interest this year and I REALLY REALLY wish we did not have to limit the ride and could welcome everyone to this wonderful event!!

RIDERS please start planning is how you're going to do this with NO crew. If we are capped at 50 people total per the state, that means I'm looking at something like 40 riders and 10 volunteers - TOTAL. We will have a few more volunteers in key locations once the ride starts and participants are more spread out. Yes, we can/will transport crew bags to the Kivett check at 24 miles (45 min hold) and Washoe check at 39 miles (which is only a 15 min hold). Crew is not needed at the Jumbo/Ophir Grade refreshment stop or the Cottonwoods vet check, please expect the same wonderful hospitality as always at those locations. All other checks are in camp (50 and 76 miles). If you need crew to come to assist with driving before/after the ride, please plan on booking them a room somewhere in Virginia City. If the state limit remains, NO additional people beyond riders and approved volunteers who are on the list will be allowed in Ride Camp.

I'm so sorry to have to limit the entries this year, but am very thankful we are still able to host the ride. If you are not successful with getting in this year, please plan on coming back to join us on September 18th, 2021!

You may still sign up for the wait list if you would like at the following link:
There are too many unknowns related to permits, sanctioning, fire danger, COVID, work time off, etc. that just aren't making it a meant-to-be year, and we wanted to give everyone as much notice as possible. We also don't think it's the year to be asking our great sponsors to donate awards when the economy is in such a rut and businesses are hurting, but we encourage everyone to buy local and from vendors you know who support us year after year. We will see you next year!

July 3-5, 2020
Friday: Vet-in, Speakers and Seminars; Night Ride to Michigan Bluff for an Ice Cream Social
Saturday: Robinson Flat to Chicken Hawk - 28 miles, including the Canyons
Sunday: Chicken Hawk to Driver’s Flat - 20 miles, including the section of Tevis trail ridden at night

As Last Year:

Basecamp at Chicken Hawk

No qualifying miles for Tevis will be awarded

New for This Year:

New shuttle driver arrangements - several options to choose from with a tiered entry fee (see below)

A night ride to enjoy the magic you would experience during Tevis

The Event:
The Educational Ride is aimed at riders wishing to participate in the Tevis Cup Ride in the future; to give riders a true look into the beauty of the trail and its challenges; to educate future Tevis riders as to best practices and horse care to help them successfully complete the Ride. The Tevis Educational Ride offers an opportunity to prepare for those challenges in a non-competitive environment.

Last year:
35 riders entered the Educational Ride
13 of those riders went to Tevis
11 were first-time Tevis riders
10 riders finished, for a 77% completion rate

Mentors: The Tevis trail is amazingly beautiful from mile 1 to 100! But it is also relentlessly challenging. Pre-riding the trail greatly increases your enjoyment and chances of finishing. After completing the Educational Ride you will have seen the toughest 50+ miles. You will ride with an experienced Tevis finisher who will share ways to successfully navigate the canyons Day 1. On Day 2 they will share ways of confidently riding the narrow cliffy trail below Foresthill. We will make every effort to accommodate fitness and experience levels. You will be paired with your mentor on Friday afternoon.

We purposely keep the entries low (40) so the mentor to entrant ratio is 1 mentor per 2-3 riders.

Fitness Requirement (Horse): Between January 1, 2019 and June 22, 2020
your horse must complete 50 miles of AERC Limited Distance or Endurance miles
or a similar sanctioning organization. Horse and rider fitness is a must!
We are after people who are interested in endurance and want a chance to learn about it, including a real ride that is safe for any rider and horse. here's the basic description of the event:

"Come attend our all new two day clinic for people who are interested in learning about Endurance riding, as well as for beginners who have some Endurance experience but would like to learn more. Bring a horse or just yourself. 6 hours of lecture, Truck and Trailer sessions, Pot luck ride dinner, ride meeting, camp overnight, and on Sunday- two fun rides- 7 and 15 miles, with vet checks, awards, and experienced Endurance riders as trial guides. When you leave on Sunday you will know all you need to know to enter your first ride, or be better prepared to continue your Endurance career!"

Our ride manager this year is Gretchen Montgomery, and I'm the clinic host. Come join us in the beautiful desert in the spring to learn about and participate in the greatest horse sport there is!

Update on the intro to endurance clinic in ridgecrest, ca on the weekend of March 21st. we have just secured a special guest speaker, the legendary Becky Hart.
The second leg of the Idaho IronHorse Challenge is only a month away! We are working on trails all weekend. Plotting awards. The fabulous Spencer Grill will be doing meals again for us.

Friday night will be brisket with vegetarian potato salad and rolls.

Saturday night will be Prime Rib French Dips with vegetarian baked beans.

Sunday night, I will provide meatball subs and you are welcome to contribute anything you don’t want to haul home for a good-time potluck and campfire chat like last year.

We will have a campfire every night.

Vets are Cassee Steed and Jessie Heinrick.

I’m trying to get enough ducks in a row to post tracks to Ride With GPS so your phones can help keep you on trails. More on that to come.

We will not have hay available this year in ride camp, due to the long cold spring. Bring your own CERTIFIED WEED FREE HAY.

It’s time to start getting those pre-entries in. E-mail, shoot me a form, FB messenger, smoke signal, skywrite- makes no difference to me as long as I know you’re coming so I have a head count.

I’ll have no signal all weekend, but I will answer questions and e-mails promptly when we get back out of the mountains.
Now it is up to YOU to save the ride. State parks is tryng to shut us down and all equestrian events out of our parks. The more entries the better so we can show them (the parks) how strong this horse community is and how strong we feel about using and protecting our trails. If we don't get your entry we will be FORCED to cancle the ride and maybe forever. So to show the parks how important it is for equestrians to use the park system YOU need to get your entries IN.
Ride camp will be at the fairgrounds. Some gravel roads lead to the Diamond mountain range with a mix of single track, cow and mustang, ranch and ATV trails. Mostly good footing (even on the ranch and ATV roads) with very few technical sections. 375,000 acres is available to us for this new venue. May is a great month there for prolific wildflowers and ample grass on the trail. One grove of aspen are loaded with pictures in the trees by the Peruvian sheep herders dating back to the mid-1900's. Juniper and pinyon pines lead to long climbs that can be deceptive in elevation gain but promise breathtaking views of Eureka from the top. Base camp is at 6,500 feet elevation with the course reaching climbs of almost 10,000 feet.

Once again the weather is creating a problem for us. Due to the tremendous amount of moisture in the country west of Cottonwood we have made a final decision that hopefully will impact the fewest people and allow us to have a great ride at Cuyama at the time of a great wildflower bloom. We will do exactly what we did in 2018. We will hold Cuyama I on the original date of March 22-24 at Laurel Mtn. We will hold Cuyama II on the date of the Lost Padres Ride, which is April 5-7. Cuyama I will take place regardless of the weather forecast, as the desert terrain only gets better with increased moisture. The desert is starting to bloom and there should be plentiful flowers throughout the ride.

Cuyama II should be a great wildflower year and the weather by the first part of April should be perfect. I know some of you will be disappointed with our decision but we have no control over the weather.
We invite horse back riders, wagons, carts, bikers, hikers, and walkers to come along and join us on the “Ride of a Lifetime” every spring for our annual “Cross State Ride”!

Do you think you are tough enough?

If you have participated on the Cross State Ride for a few days, as a white scarf recipient, as a teamster or a wagon passenger, a horse (or mule) back rider, bicyclist, a walker, if it’s your 1st Cross State Ride or your 37th, whether in the past, present, or in the future the club salutes you! YOU are the reason we have been able to continue to preserve our opportunity for public access to this very unique, absolutely phenomenal trail spanning across the State of Washington!

THANK YOU to each and every person who has contributed to showing how important it is to keep access to the entirety of this State Park Trail intact for future generations to come!

The Palouse to Cascades trail (formerly the John Wayne trail) follows the route of the former Milwaukee Railroad, running east-west across the state. The trail is over 200 miles long and provides a unique opportunity for recreation.

Our Association is made up primarily of horseback riders and teamsters, but we welcome walkers and cyclists. We sponsor a two week trip across Washington each spring.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING THE EASTERN MOJAVE RIDE:

The EM Ride is usually held entirely in the Mojave National Preserve and is governed by the National Park Service. They are unwilling to give us a multi-year permit, therefore we are forced to deal with them every year. The process must start with contacting their office and telling the person in charge of permits that we want to do a ride and she then tells us exactly the same thing every year for the past 15 years. We then proceed by changing the date on the application and other required submitals. You would think this would be an easy process but every years is the same old story of them waiting till the very last minute to give us a permit. This year we made the first contact in November and received no response as of January 29th. Time has run out and we can no longer wait for a response. Its official, we will hold the ride in the Coso Junction. We have obtained permission from the BLM, The Coso Store and the AERC. We will change some trails around and add some trails we haven’t used recently. The Coso terrain, scenery and vegetation is closest to what we have in the Eastern Mojave.

February 7-10, 2019 – 4 days & 200 miles + 4 days of 25’s each day!

10 to 15 mile Intro/Duck Rides each day

More information to come shortly.

Region: Pacific South, California.

Name: Eastern Mojave at Coso Junction I, II, III, IV There will be an intro ride plus a 50 and 25 each day

Date: February 7th thru 10th, 2019

Directions: Ridecamp will be at the Coso Junction Store, approximately 35 miles north of Ridgecrest on Hwy 395, behind the Chevron gas station. Click here to get directions via google. Coming from either direction on Hwy 395, midway between Pearsonville and Olancha, there is a California Rest Area on the east side of the highway.

Trail Description: This ride will be on jeep roads and single track trails with a moderate amount of elevation gain. Footing will be sandy with a few occasional rocky sections. The terrain, vegetation and views are equal or better than the Cima Rd area. The elevation is lower and we hope for good weather.

Ride Rules: AERC rules apply. The management, unlike the AERC Board of Directors, is able to differentiate between an endurance ride and an endurance race. If you are into endurance riding you will probably enjoy this ride. If you are a real competitor and are looking for a race you are likely to find the lack of structure here to be an abomination. This is an old time endurance ride like we used to have when you could print all the AERC rules on a single page. Back in the good old days we used to ride more and read less. Those were better times.

Ride Photographer: Lynne Glazer will be shooting this ride
Ride times are not a part of the challenge so the possibility a “turtle” hitting it out of the park is very doable. The rider who completes the most NW Diamond Run miles with the best CRIs wins!

We want to reward our loyal riders by creating this prestigious award. Additionally, we want to recognize horse fitness and rider responsibility in a competition that upholds the endurance motto “to finish is to win”.

Run to first base at the two-day Creek to Capitol Peak, June 21-22, in the beautiful Capitol Forest outside Olympia, WA. Round second base with the Midnight Rider, a unique night riding experience on August 17 outside Chehalis, WA on the Willapa Hills Trail. Load up the bases with Crazy Daze I and II at the beautiful Riverside State Equestrian Park near Spokane, WA August 31st and September 1st. Then slide into home plate at Prater Mountain, near Priest River, Idaho. Hit it out of the park and bring in your home run for the chance to be a winning team!

We want to make it worth your while, so in addition to providing beautiful northwest scenery, well-marked trails, educational clinics and awesome ride management and volunteers, the top 3 finishers will receive phenomenal awards. Just to give you a taste of what you could win: the first place finisher receives a free ride at each NW Diamond Run ride for 2020 plus more! (Over $400 in awards for first place).

Knock it out of the park in 2019 and join the challenging adventure the NW Diamond Run is offering! Details for each of the four rides can be found at aerc.org under the Calendar tab. The Northwest Diamond Run is coming soon to Facebook and will have a webpage as well.
