PS Region: Warner Springs Cancelled

November 11 2015

I am sorry to let you know that we again will have to cancel the Warner Springs Ride which was on the calendar for January 2016. As requested last year by the ranch management, I contacted them regarding this year’s event and was informed that the renovations are way behind schedule and they have only now gotten the golf course and golf grill open. They have only done some preliminary work on the main portion of the ranch and do not have any permits which would allow them to hold any events at this time. We will try again for next year.

CT: Indian Territory

The 23rd Annual Indian Territory Endurance Ride is going to be one of the best rides in a long time!  The trails were under water all summer but have dried out nicely and are free of clutter and debris.  Link has brush hogged, cleared trail, and smoothed several treacherous spots while several of us have lopped and trimmed like crazy!  The weather looks nice and the veterinarians are excited to be back out there.

The LD and 50 milers will start at 7:30 to take advantage of all the daylight hours.  The last 50 is usually in with several hours to spare; this is an excellent first 50.  You can also take advantage of the elevator option.  There will be a pot luck once the last 50 miler is in off trail so bring your favorite dish to share.

Please let me know if you're coming.  The flier is on the AERC and OCER sites with an entry provided for your convenience.  (No need to pre-enter.)  There is no camping fee but we are asking for an $8 donation for trail maintenance.  Link and I rented a skid steer to clear the trail, brush hog, and fix the wooden bridge.  The entry fee doesn't cover the cost of hauling that monstrosity the 150 miles round trip much less actually renting it.  Thank you in advance for helping out with the trail maintenance.

We look forward to seeing you all next weekend at Blue Creek Campground on Lake Oologah!

SW: Lead Follow or Get Out of My Way

Mark your calendar, just 2 short months away is the 5th Annual Lead Follow or Get Out of My Way Ride at McDowell Mountain Regional Park.

The ride will be held on Saturday November 14, 2015.

We will be offering AERC and AHA sanctioned 75, 50, 30 mile rides along with a 12 mile fun ride.
We have received several entries and some new riders so get your entries mailed. We do have a limit of 150 entries.

New this year we have added a 3rd Veterinarian to help speed up the vetting process. We are so lucky to have such a wonderful, knowledgeable and experienced team of Control Judges including Rick Poteste DVM, Bradley Scott Houser DVM, and Mark Anderson DVM.

Trail changes: McDowell Mt Park made some minor trail changes in Shallomo Wash so the trail is mostly out of the wash. We have made a minor change in the trail design which will result in less wash for all distances. Riders and horses will be very pleased with the improvements.

We are very fortunate once again to have local Equine Photographer Susan Kordish again to photograph our ride again this year. She has been a photographer for 21 years. Through the years she has learned to “see” through the lens and transform her images into the work of art they become. Susan does freelance work for a number of equine magazines and submits images to other magazines and online competitions. She also participates in juried gallery shows here in Arizona and shoots equestrian events. Susan has had two Endurance News covers since 2011. Susan’s ride photos can be viewed and purchased at www.azcowgirlphotography.com her email is cowgirlphotography@hughes.net. Susan Kordish PO Box 204 Skull Valley, AZ

W: Quicksilver Fall Classic

The Quicksilver Fall Classic in 2014 was limited to 70 rider and we had a
waiting list. This year is different. We behaved so well last year that the
ranger will allow more entrants for our October 3, 2015 ride. The perfect
fall ride awaits your pleasure. Don't be on the waiting list so that all
week you worry about whether you should be packing the horse trailer or not.

You know all those old horse magazines that you can't bear to throw out,
but are clogging up your house? Well bring them to our ride. We will have a
special table for you to spread them out on. In appreciation, you can grab
any that other people have brought. Any left the day after the ride will be
recycled. Now they have to be horse oriented. We do not want People, Sports
Illustrated or Architectural Digest. Just horsey magazines for horsey
people.

With the increase in the size of the ride, we definitely need more
volunteers. So earn your Brownie Scout badge by helping out on, before or
after ride day. Contact Lori Oleson at 408-710-5651 or Jayne Perryman at
408-828-5362 and you will make their day! And all the riders, too.

Check the AERC ride calendar, circle October 3rd, send in your entry and
smile, even if there is no one around to see it.

You know this ride will be Christmas, your birthday and the 4th of July all
rolled into one great day of rolling hills, shaded creek trails, great
companions, and then the real reason we are there....we are hopelessly, and
beyond redemption, in love with the horses.

NW: Oregon 100/Pac North

Oregon 100/Pac North Benefit is coming up Set. 19, in Brothers, Oregon. It's a great desert ride and absolutely perfect to move up in distance to the next level. This ride is a benefit ride for our Pac North FEI International Team. Everything is donated: awards, vet’s time, etc. All the profits go to the Team support and we depend on donations to get us there. Now that FEI is cleaning up the horse abuse issues that have gone on in some areas overseas we can focus on helping our Northwest riders.

Please consider donating those items to Oregon 100 that we can use for awards. Or you can make a cash donation to offset expenses, donate something of your choosing or contact vendors you know who might donate. Anything a rider can use or is horse/endurance related makes a great award.

For more info on the ride, see

NW: Lost-N-Lava

Join us on September 25, 2015

No, you won't get lost, but you will ride some picturesque country. Trails will consist of two tracks and ATV trails on BLM property. Some rocky areas, rolling hills, but lots of great footing to move out or just cruise around and enjoy the incredible scenery.

We'll have 25, 55, and 75-mile endurance distances. A 14-mile trail ride will be available. Ride Camp is on private land adjacent to the Big Wood River.

So please come and ride! Located just west of SH-75 about 20 miles north of Shoshone, Idaho. It's easy to get to if you pay attention to the mile markers on State Highway 75. The turn-off is on the west side between the Big Wood River Bridge and the Richfield Canal bridge. A sign will be at the turn-off.

If traveling northbound on SH-75, the turn-off is about 0.2 of a mile north of mile marker 92. If you go over the canal bridge you have gone too far. If traveling southbound turn right about 0.8' of a mile south of Mile Post 93. This is about 0.5 mile south of the Richfield Canal Bridge. If you go over the Big Wood River bridge you missed the turn.

Once you get on the two-track you will drive about 2.5 miles to camp. The two-track is kind of rough in places, so take your time. You will go through an antique yard and around a couple homes. Just keep following the ribbons. You will see a corral to your left with draft horses. Keep going. You'll go past a couple gates, turn another bend and find the nicest flattest camp you will ever see!

Dinner will be provided Saturday night. Ride meeting starts promptly at 7:00 Friday night. Head vet is Dr. Keith Rouble, DVM. We will also have a treatment vet on site per the rules and recommendations of AERC.

Horse water will be provided at camp and on the trail. Rides will start by going through the Big Wood River. The river is about 2-3 feet deep if there is water running through it. The river will probably be dry. The property owners train draft horses so be prepared to see draft horses pulling wagons.

Cost: $90 for 25 and 55 mile distances, $110 for 75-mile distance. Juniors half price. Non-AERC members will be charged a day membership of $15. Trail ride is $25 and you don’t need to be an AERC member. All minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult and wear a helmet. Dinner is included with your ride entry. Extra Saturday evening meals may be purchased for $10.00.

Dogs are welcome but must be leashed and all times. This ride camp is on private land, but the BLM permit has required that we use weed free hay. Weed free hay is required and can be purchased at the Valley Coop in Shoshone. I'll try to bring some for the trail. Start times will depend on the weather.

Questions? Call Lynn White at 208-961-1024. Or visit us on FaceBook. at Lost-n-Lava Endurance Ride. New to Endurance riding? Check out the American Endurance Ride Conference Website at www.aerc.org

MT: Zone Team Endurance Challenge (ZTEC)

Zone Team Endurance Challenge (aka ZTEC) - June 6-7, 2015 - Ashland, Montana

What's it all about???

In 2007 we hosted the Zone Team Endurance Challenge. It was a one-day 100 mile ride that was open to Teams competing in AERC and FEI Divisons. We really enjoyed doing the ride - highlighting the 'team aspect' of riding as well as adding the 'pomp and circumstance' of a 'championship type' event.

For the last three years we've tried this format again and had a great time - our completion rate increased and only two horses have been treated!!! The main difference between Z-TEC this year and Z-TEC in 2007 is we're offering it for ALL of the distances we're having this year!!! On Saturday June 6th riders will have the opportunity to ride either in a 25 mile, 50 mile or 75 mile ride and on Sunday June 7th we are offering a 35 mile ride, 55 mile ride or 100 mile ride.

So how's this going to work you ask? Teams will consist of 4 riders - any 4 riders - old riders, new riders, young riders, red haired riders, riders from Montana, etc - ANYTHING GOES! Placings will be based on how well your team does with their final total ride time. Awards will be all "Team Based" - IE your team has the opportunity to stand up on the podium for their TEAM GOLD MEDAL (well, not really "Gold", but "Gold" in color!) and other goodies yet to be determined. Everyone who completes will also receive a completion prize.

Commonly asked questions we've received have been:

How do I get on a team? Teams are self-forming - call your friends, call your neighbors, call your friends' neighbors.

What if I don't have a team? Contact us and we'll put you in contact with teams who are looking for riders. We plan to have available a 'looking for team members page' so riders can fill and/or join teams.

Do I have to go FAST? Heck no, that is the beauty of this concept - riding for your team and finishing will be rewarded. The top three finishing times will be added up to create the overall finish time of the team. Teams that finish only two riders will have a 'mock time' added (total ride time allowed minus hold time) to give the team three finish times.

How will we know how we're doing as a team throughout the day? We will be posting throughout the day the team standings based on the top three ride times of each team.

Can we wear 'uniforms' and park together? Oh, absolutely! In fact, we're highly recommending 'team apparal' and 'team parking'.

Homesteaded in 1883 by Captain Calvin Howes (a former sea Captain from Massachusetts), the Circle Bar Ranch is the home of the Fort Howes Endurance Rides. Started in 1997, the Fort Howes rides have grown from a one-day ride offering a 25 mile Limited Distance ride and a 50 mile Endurance Ride to currently offering a two-day ride with 25 and 35 mile Limited Distance rides, a 50 and 55 mile Endurance Ride and a 75 and 100 mile Endurance Rides. We also include FEI divisions for both Seniors and Young Riders in the 50/55/75 and 100 mile distances. In addition, this year we're serving as a Team Trial for the US Endurance Team - riders will be demonstrating in the 75 mile ride for the new Chef d'Equipe, Mark Dial, and Team Veterinarian, Dr. Anne Christopherson.

Trails consist of Open Meadows, Cow Trails, and unimproved Jeep Trails. Riders can expect to have at least one 1000' elevation change in each loop they ride out on. Water is available out on trail every 3-5 miles. Currently all Vet Checks will all be in basecamp, however, depending on the trails we may have one check out on the 75 and/or 100 mile rides (we'll make arrangements to haul your crewing supplies out if necessary).

Basecamp is a huge open field with lots of room and plenty of horse water available.

We will again be offering our Rancher's dinner on Friday night including steak and all the trimmings. Saturday night will include a BBQ with hamburgers and hotdogs.

Temperatures in the early part of June range in the 40's overnight and up into the 80's during the days. Though one should always plan for anything - this is Montana after all and we subscribe to the saying "Don't like the weather, wait five minutes, it will change”.

Online entry available at:  http://www.rideentry.org/ZTEC/2015Entry.html

See ya’ll in Montana June 6-7, 2015!

SW: Barefoot in New Mexico

Alamogordo, NM

With the success of last years ride, we are happy to reduce this years entry fees and Juniors rider will receive a 50% discount! With beautiful scenery, barefoot friendly trails, and great New Mexico hospitality we sure hope you can join us for this years Barefoot In New Mexico Ride!

Barefoot In New Mexico is held in the scenic Tularosa Basin near the White Sands National Monument. Trails are on hard packed dirt roads, two track, cow trails and cross country. Mike Guy has done the trail scouting and we have made some changes to previous trails to improve the overall ride experience.

Ride camp is at the residence of ride manager, Marcelle Himanka, camp is 86 acres of flat desert terrain with plenty of room to make yourself and your equines right at home. We will provide horse water and port-a-potties, evening meals for entered riders and other folks may purchase a really good home cooked meal for $10.00. Evanna Guy and her sister Jessie are the chief cooks and they do a great job. Linda Sherrill will be taking photos on trail so bring your smile!

We are a beginner friendly ride and would love to show you the ropes and help you along the way. We are passionate about endurance and embrace the AERC spririt of, "To finish is to win". If you are not ready to try a 25 or 50 miler then you are welcome to participate in the introductory fun rides, 10 miles, held each day and join us for dinner and awards afterward. We sincerely hope to see you in ride camp.

PS: Descanco

Come join us for a weekend of riding in the Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. Basecamp located in Descanso, CA. On Saturday, there will be a 15 mile introduction ride, 25 mile limited distance, and 50 mile ride. This will also be the Arabian Horse Association Region One Arabian Horse Association 50 Mile Endurance Championship. On Sunday, join us for another 15 mile introduction ride and a 30 mile limited distance.

• Scenic trail through the pines
• Great completion awards
• Juniors pay half price
• Hay for horses at vet checks
• Café, gas, market & feed store nearby
• Competent, friendly veterinarians
• Refreshments for riders at vet checks
• Lunch provided for all riders & crews
• Includes dinner Friday night
• Includes dinner Saturday night

The Descanso Endurance Ride in southern California is a moderate (plus) to difficult ride.

The scenery is beautiful with the ride starting at the staging area in Descanso, CA and climbing up to the pine trees and meadows of theCuyamaca Rancho State Park. The course is on trails and fire roads, with good footing. There are a few stream crossings. The trail can be rocky in some areas so if it is appropriate, you may wish to consider putting pads on your horse. The trail is safe, but there are some areas that require horsemanship. There is a lot of climbing so you will need to bring a fit horse, or plan to take the full time allowed. You will be sharing the park area with other equestrians, hikers, bicyclists, deer and wild turkeys.

There is crew access to all vet checks, but since hay, bran and carrots will be provided for the horses, rider refreshments at the vet checks and lunches for all riders, support crews are really not necessary. Thank you to our volunteers for making this possible.

The Descanso Endurance ride basecamp is in an open field next to McClintock’s Saddle Works. Descanso Hay and Feed is also nearby. There is a small store with expensive gas (including diesel), and a café within a mile. The only water source will be a water trough that we will keep filled with a hose. If it is more convenient for you, you may want to bring your own horse water. There are no trees at basecamp, so you may want to bring your own clouds also. Dogs MUST be kept on leashes – please!

DIRECTIONS TO BASE CAMP: From San Diego via I-5 or I-15, go east on I-8 approximately 35 miles. Go past Alpine, and the Viejas Casino. Exit at Highway 79/Descanso (exit 40). Turn left and go north under the freeway. A mile down the road (at the café), turn left onto Riverside Drive. The store and gas station will be about 1/2 mile down the road on the left and the basecamp will be 1/4 mile past that on the right.

Endurance Clinics Abound!

Endurance 101 Clinic
March 28 2015 - 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm
near Adrian, Oregon

if riding is your passion, perhaps you'd like to try endurance riding!

An unmounted/mounted clinic to introduce you to the sport of AERC Endurance Riding -- we will review how the competitions work, how to prepare the horse and rider and how to have not just success, but fun! There will be a mock vet check, metabolic checks of horses, how to handle trail emergencies, hands on look at equipment, a little bit about feeding and electrolyting, as well as plenty of time for questions and answers. Then Butts in the Saddle entrants will saddle up and go for a ride, cross water, etc. All horses must be group safe. While the clinic is geared toward riders new to the sport, either contemplating trying it, or in their first season or two of competition, I'd be happy to include more advanced info if requested such as moving up in distances etc.. We'll also address horse camping, trail etiquette and safety. I could use a couple veteran rider helpers too.

Cost:Two divisions with a "butt in the saddle" price ($85) and a "butt in the chair" no horse price ($40), we'll still get your hands on a horse for pulse and stuff though. March 28 for the clinic. Going to secure a vet or two for some speaking.

The plan is to keep it “green” and not kill too many trees with paper handouts, but will give you a CD full of information, including internet links, powerpoint presentations, and a ton of reading material that will keep you busy for weeks.

Please register by March 20, just request a registration form and I'll get it off to you. There will be a limited number of "Butts in saddle" spots, no limit for "Butts in Chairs". Thank you!! zap6000@gmail.com If it doesn't fill by March 20 the event will be canceled and checks returned.

Bring a chair, your refreshments, dress for outdoors, and plan to have a good time and make new friends!

Host/speaker: Karen Bumgarner
Veterinarian/speakers: Dr Tom Bergstrom DVM and Dr David Hayes DVM

Endurance Ride Clinic 101 & 201
April 25-26 2015
Windfall Ranch - Alpine, California

SATURDAY CLINIC — Through lectures and hands on demos, we will cover the basics of the sport of endurance riding, which will include what the rider needs to know, such as saddle fit, conditioning, setting up your camp, horse nutrition, presenting your horse to the vet, taking your horse’s pulse, what to expect at your first competition, and what to do after the ride. This will benefit seasoned endurance riders as well as those interested in taking the “mysteries”out of endurance riding. Saturday is a NO horse day.
SUNDAY CLINIC — is limited to riders who have already completed an endurance ride or attended Saturday’s Endurance Riding 101 Clinic. Sunday will be an opportunity for riders to participate in a “mock” endurance ride, following a marked course on two 6 mile loops on private trails with a vet check between the loops. There will be an open forum with an opportunity to ask questions that participants may have. There will be a barbeque at the end of the clinic.

W: Nevada Derby I & II

http://www.aerc.org/Calendar/2015NevadaDerby.pdf

HELLO FELLOW ENDURANCE RIDERS ... Come enjoy some great Nevada hospitality by joining us for the 2015 Nevada Derby I & II Endurance Rides.

Washoe Lake State Park is now the permanent home. This is a wonderful venue for putting on a ride. Riders will be able to enjoy many of the same trails used for the Washoe Valley Rides, while participating in the first leg of the NASTR Triple Crown.

There will be a 25 and 50 mile distance for each day. We are once again offering a 15 mile fun ride on Sunday, for riders and/or horses who are not quite ready for a 25/50 mile ride. This won’t be a timed event, just a leisurely trail ride.

The Nevada Derby 50 Mile Ride (day one) is the first test in our NASTR Triple Crown - three rides, of increasing distance and difficulty, through Northern Nevada valleys, deserts, foothills, and mountains (Nevada Derby 50 / April 4th * NASTR 75 / May 30th * VC 100 / September 19th). We invite you to test yourself, and join us in the fun and challenge, as well as the special awards.

Our ride manager this year is Beth Kauffmann (775) 685-9839, Bkauffmann53@yahoo.com, and our ride secretary is Karon Dutcher, (775) 690-2033, karondutcher@gmail.com.

We look forward to seeing you the first weekend in April :)

Oregon: Endurance 101 Clinic

Hosted by Karen Bumgarner

Saturday March 28 2015
1:00 - 6:00 PM
2 miles down Succor Creek Rd, south of Hwy 201, between Homedale, ID and Adrian, OR.

If riding is your passion, perhaps you'd like to try endurance riding!

We're having an unmounted/mounted clinic to introduce you to the sport of AERC Endurance Riding -- we will review how the competitions work, how to prepare the horse and rider and how to have not just success, but fun!

While the clinic is geared toward riders new to the sport, either contemplating trying it, or in their first season or two of competition, I'd be happy to include more advanced info if requested such as moving up in distances etc. We'll also address horse camping, trail etiquette and safety. I could use a couple veteran rider helpers too.

Cost: Two divisions with a "butt in the saddle" price ($85) and a "butt in the chair" no horse price ($40), we'll still get your hands on a horse for pulse and stuff though.

Thank you!!
zap6000@gmail.com

If it doesn't fill by March 20 the event will be canceled and checks returned.

Bring a chair, your refreshments, dress for outdoors, and plan to have a good time and make new friends!
